Cavities — clinically known as dental caries — are caused by a combination of bacteria, sugars, and time. The good news? Once you understand how cavities form, preventing them becomes simple. Here's our seven-step protocol that we share with every patient at Famicare.
1. Brush correctly — twice daily
Use a soft-bristled brush at a 45° angle to the gumline. Brush for two full minutes (set a timer or use an electric brush with a built-in timer). Hard scrubbing damages enamel — gentle, methodical strokes are the gold standard.
2. Floss before bed — not after
Bacteria multiply overnight when saliva flow drops. Flossing before bed removes the food debris that would otherwise feed those bacteria for 8 hours.
3. Choose fluoridated toothpaste
Fluoride remineralises early decay. Look for 1450ppm fluoride on the label — anything less is sub-therapeutic for adults.
4. Cut down on snacking — not just sugar
It's not the amount of sugar but the frequency of exposure. Sipping a sugary drink over 30 minutes is worse than drinking it in one go. Stick to 3 meals + 1 snack, then rinse with water.
5. Drink water after every meal
Water neutralises acids and washes away food particles. Make it a habit, especially after coffee, tea, and meals.
6. Get pit-and-fissure sealants
Sealants are thin coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars — they prevent over 80% of cavities in those teeth. Especially recommended for children aged 6–14.
7. Visit your dentist every 6 months
Professional cleaning removes tartar that brushing can't. Early cavities found during regular check-ups can often be reversed with fluoride — no drilling needed.
